El Clasico 2018
El Clasico 2018 will have neither Messi nor Ronaldo for the first time since 2007.

As far as prevailing mood is concerned for the home side, Rafinha made it clear Barcelona are feeling pumped up. Beating Inter 2-0 does that for anyone. Real Madrid, the visitors are in an entirely different predicament. Their scoring woes may have disappeared in the Champions League but they looked anything but assured. Certainly, players like Wales’ Bale can change games anytime, as he did with a back-heeled assist for Marcelo in the Champions League. Messi’s absence with injury will be of no help to the hosts.

2018- El Clasico with no Messi or Ronaldo

In a sign of things to come, we will witness a Clasico that has neither Messi nor Ronaldo in a long time. In the previous Clasico of 2018, both of the Talismans were on the scoresheet. This time, none of them will be on the team-sheet. This is perhaps the most important team news for this Clasico.

The second most important talking point before the first Clasico of the season is the future of the  Real Madrid manager. Julen Lopetegui could be sacked, with his team dangling by a thread in the seventh spot of the league table prior to this monumental game.

Barcelona v Real Madrid: Team News

Messi, out injured with his arm. The Argentine was injured against Sevilla and his recovery diagnosis has him out of three weeks since. In defence, Samuel Umtiti misses this game due to his ongoing knee injury problem.

Real Madrid:

Dani Carvajal is the most significant injury to the Madrid squad. Thankfully, Marcelo is back in the fold for this one. Vicinius Jr. is serving a suspension for the red card he earned in a Castilla game. Hard luck.

Obviously, there is no clear candidate to reach the levels of Messi or Ronaldo in the El Clasico 2018. For the neutrals, this game will still be a feast.

What’s being said about this El Clasico

First up is Ernesto Valverde, hosting Real Madrid on Sunday. He doesn’t buy into the whole down-and-out saga around Madrid.

“Madrid can be even more dangerous,”

“They will come out here to face us and although they come in crisis will want to demonstrate their strength, which they have because they have great players.

“We must forget about today… I do not trust these situations.”

– Valverde

Clearly, the words of a man to know better than to fall for the simple notion of bad form and crisis. He clearly knows no Clasico is ever easy. The last Clasico of 2018 should be no different.
